Company

For 81 years, we've achieved success through our ability to innovate, placing a clear emphasis on how we best serve our customers’ needs. As demand continues to grow, we have expanded rapidly, now delivering a superior range of dry goods, frozen and chilled products, fresh seafood and meat, confectionery, paper products, and cleaning solutions.

In recent years, we’ve seen significant growth and invested in our systems and processes, building a close partnership with Woolworths Group that has continued to deliver high-quality service for our customers and suppliers.

In 2024, Woolworths moved to a 100% interest in the PFD business, bringing PFD exciting opportunities as a strategic part of the Group. Sharing expertise across both teams will ensure our continued success and drive further growth and unlock our collective potential.

About this Position

We bring people together through food. Behind every café breakfast, school canteen, and restaurant service is a team making it happen while the city sleeps. At the heart of our Chullora Distribution Centre, the Night Shift Manager is that steady hand who is leading from the front, keeping accuracy high, and ensuring our customers are ready for their day.

If you’re looking for a role where no two nights are the same, where you’ll guide a team of 50+ in a high-volume FMCG environment, and where your leadership directly impacts the smooth running of our business - This is it!

The Night Shift Manager is the key decision-maker onsite overnight. You’ll lead a large and diverse crew of warehouse staff, directly manage 5 supervisors (including a Warehouse Supervisor, Inventory Lead, Load Supervisors, and Wave Planner), and set the tone for safety, compliance, and performance.

This role is high-impact, fast-paced, and not for the faint-hearted. Success comes from balancing operational discipline with people leadership and getting the job done while developing a strong, motivated team culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Night Crew: Oversee 50+ staff across picking, packing, loading, and inventory functions.
  • Own the Shift: Make confident, on the spot decisions as the most senior leader onsite.
  • Build a Strong Team Culture: Support and mentor supervisors, celebrate wins, address performance gaps, and grow capability.
  • Drive Operational Excellence: Ensure picking accuracy, OTIF delivery, HACCP and OH&S standards, and housekeeping compliance.
  • Keep it Seamless: Partner with day shift managers to ensure smooth handovers and operational continuity.
  • Think Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for efficiency and warehouse optimisation (layout, workflow, safety).
  • Be the Anchor: Stay calm under pressure, resolve issues quickly, and maintain service levels for a high-demand customer base.

What We’re Looking For

To thrive in this role, you will bring:

  • Proven leadership experience in warehousing or distribution (FMCG experience highly regarded).
  • A continuous improvement mindset: confident running solo but always looking for ways to lift performance.
  • Strength in people leadership; you can mentor, hold others accountable, and lead with fairness and empathy.
  • Solid understanding of inventory, warehouse operations, and compliance (HACCP & OH&S).
  • Strong problem-solving, organisational, and communication skills.
  • A steady, confident presence and able to lead diverse personalities and inspire trust on shift.
  • Systems experience (Manhattan WMS a bonus).
  • Valid forklift licence (bonus but not essential).

What Success Looks Like

  • Night operations run smoothly with accuracy and compliance never compromised.
  • Supervisors feel supported, performance is managed fairly, and the team culture continues to strengthen.
  • Shift KPIs are met consistently, and continuous improvement opportunities are identified and actioned.
  • You build trust with the day shift manager through seamless handovers and operational continuity.
  • The night crew feels motivated, challenged, and proud of their contribution, retention stays strong, and capability grows.
  • You are the steady hand in high-pressure moments, keeping standards high and the operation humming.

The Induction

We know this role is critical. That’s why you’ll complete a 5-6 week induction across both day and night shifts to set you up for success.
